The Codex
Lore & Guidelines
The living record of our world — the customs, histories, and agreements that bind us as storytellers.
About RPDeck
RPDeck is a community hub for Final Fantasy XIV roleplayers on the Aether data center. We exist to connect adventurers, free companies, and storytellers across the realm — providing a shared space to chronicle characters, coordinate events, and build the living world together.
Whether you are a seasoned veteran of the Seventh Umbral Era or a newcomer still finding your footing in Eorzea, this codex is your reference for how we tell stories here.
World-Building Notes
Canon Adherence
We follow the established lore of Final Fantasy XIV as our foundation. Original characters, free companies, and storylines are welcome — but they should fit within the world rather than contradict it. When in doubt, ask the community before introducing lore-breaking elements.
The Aether Data Center
All characters and free companies listed here are based on the Aether data center. Cross-world visits are common and welcome — note your home world on your character profile so others know where to find you.
Timeline
Roleplay on RPDeck takes place in the present of the game's main scenario. References to past events (the Calamity, the Dragonsong War, etc.) are part of our shared history. Spoiler-sensitive content should be flagged in event descriptions.
Original Lore
Player-created lore — custom organizations, locations, and histories — is encouraged, provided it does not contradict established canon. If your free company has a unique origin story or a secret headquarters, document it on your FC profile so others can engage with it.
House Rules
Consent First
All roleplay involving conflict, dark themes, or sensitive subject matter requires the out-of-character consent of all participants. Use the /tell system or Discord to check in before escalating a scene.
Separate IC and OOC
Keep in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) communication clearly distinct. Misunderstandings between the two are the most common source of community friction. When speaking as yourself, use double parentheses ((like this)) in /say or /em.
No Godmodding
You control your character — not anyone else's. Do not write the actions, reactions, or inner states of another player's character without their explicit permission. This includes assuming hits land, wounds are taken, or emotions are felt.
Respect the Lore
Powerful abilities, rare bloodlines, and exceptional status should be earned through story, not assumed from the start. If your character is a Warrior of Light, an Ancient, or otherwise exceptional, discuss it with the community before introducing it in shared scenes.
Dark Themes
Mature and dark themes are permitted within reason — this is a world shaped by war, loss, and sacrifice. Content involving graphic violence, trauma, or adult themes must be kept to private scenes between consenting adults and must not be conducted in public venues.
Community First
We are here to tell stories together. Competitive play, drama, and out-of-character conflict have no place in this community. Treat every player with the respect you would want shown to yourself.
RP Guidelines
Getting Started
New to roleplay on RPDeck? Start by creating your character profile — it is your introduction to the community. Include a brief backstory, a few personality notes, and at least one RP hook so others know how to approach you. You do not need a complete history before your first scene.
Finding Scenes
Check the Events board for scheduled gatherings, tavern nights, and storyline sessions. Walk-up roleplay is common in Limsa Lominsa (the Aftcastle), Ul'dah (the Quicksand), and player housing districts. Free companies often host their own events — browse the FC directory to find a group whose focus matches yours.
Writing Style
Most roleplayers on Aether use third-person emote style: /em draws her blade, eyes narrowing. First-person is also accepted. Avoid one-line responses in active scenes — aim for two to four sentences that give your scene partner something to respond to.
Conflict Resolution
When characters come into conflict, use the /random system for contested actions unless both parties agree to a narrative outcome. A /random 100 roll — high wins — is the default. Discuss stakes before rolling so both parties know what a win or loss means for the scene.
